Labyrinth of Dreams
Labyrinth of Dreams by Nadee Fernando-O’Driscoll is a gripping and poignant novel based on true events that delves into the harsh realities of societal expectations and their impact on women and men alike. Set against the backdrop of 1970s Sri Lanka, this story offers a powerful exploration of love, betrayal, and survival.
The novel follows the intertwined lives of Helen, Peter, and Mala, who are each driven to confront the societal norms that dictate their choices. Through their struggles, the book sheds light on the oppressive cultural values that have victimized countless women—and still do in many parts of the world.
Mala, a 53-year-old woman, finds her simple, content life shattered by an unexpected email that challenges everything she believed to be true. Her journey raises questions about whether she can overcome the turmoil or if she will be condemned by the same society, she thought she understood.
The narrative also transports readers to 1972, where Helen, a final-year student, dreams of a life filled with love and luxury, and Peter, a college lecturer, has his future meticulously planned. Despite their divergent dreams, fate leads them on a life-altering journey that forces them to confront the rigid expectations of their conservative society. Their paths cross in ways that will have profound consequences for generations to come-including Helen’s firstborn, Mala, whom she is forced to give up for adoption.
Through Labyrinth of Dreams, Nadee Fernando-O’Driscoll provides a platform to discuss the societal pressures that force individuals into choices that entrap them, highlighting the often-overlooked pain and struggle endured by those who stray from accepted norms.
The novel is not just a story—it’s a conversation starter about the devastating consequences of societal judgment and the human cost of adhering to outdated cultural values.

Nadee Fernando O’Driscoll
Mother, wife, daughter, sister, friend, colleague and now an author, Nadee is a woman who writes her own story, dances to her own tune, and sings her own song (off-key, she admits).
Born and raised in Sri Lanka, Nadee earned her Bachelor of Science from the University of Pune in, India. In 2004, she moved to Ottawa, Canada, and now resides in the beautiful town of Carleton Place with her husband, daughter, two cats and a dog. Nadee and her husband also have two adult children who are out in the world, writing their own success stories. She cherishes sharing her life and passions with her husband, children and their precious granddaughter.
Though Nadee always had a knack for writing, it wasn’t until she was 49 that she considered writing a novel. As someone who has always felt strongly about social pressures and conventions- particularly in socially conservative countries-Nadee, being somewhat of an unconventional herself, found her voice through her debut novel Labyrinth Of Dreams. This novel not only ignited a newfound passion for writing but also provided her with a platform to highlight the struggles women and others face due to archaic social biases.
Embracing this new chapter in her life, Nadee is determined to challenge dogmatism within conventional societies and to demonstrate that it is never too late to dream a new dream. She believes that we are not defined by failures but rather by how we overcome them.

Labyrinth of Dreams - a journey to break the barriers
I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who joined me for the launch of Labyrinth of Dreams.
A special thank you to my family—my husband Paul and our children Gabby and Conor—and to my publisher, Lucky Book Publisher, for making my dream a reality. Sharing my journey with my loved ones was an unforgettable experience.
I am eager to continue this journey of raising awareness about the human cost of archaic norms and values, especially in conservative societies.
- Imagine living in a society where the stigma surrounding unwed mothers condemns not just the mothers, but their children as well.
- Picture a world where children face discrimination due to the stigma associated with adoption, judged for circumstances beyond their control.
- Consider a society where women are pressured to prove their virginity to be deemed worthy of a husband.
Would you want to be part of such a society?
- If your answer is no, I invite you to join the conversation and advocate for change.
- If your answer is yes, I encourage you to share your perspective and explain how such beliefs could benefit anyone.
Let’s come together to discuss these critical issues and work towards a more compassionate and understanding society. Thank you!
